Campaigns
After enlisting in April 1942, Marmion was sent to Officer Candidate School at Quantico, Virginia, but did not complete the course. He was then assigned to Headquarters Company, Third Battalion, 21st Marines as a member of the intelligence section and deployed overseas. Marmio would spend time training in New Zealand and the Solomon Islands before returning to California for another attempt at earning a commission. Frustrated again, he attended advanced infantry school at Camp Elliott in the summer of 1944 before eventually shipping to Hawaii and joining the 24th Marines as a replacement.
