Edward Bartosik was born in Greenridge, Illinois in 1919. His parents, Joseph and Anna Bartosik, were Polish immigrants who eventually headed a family of six. Edward showed some mechanical aptitude, and by 1940 was working as a speedometer assembler for an automobile company.

Bartosik joined the Marine Corps from Chicago, Illinois, in 1943. After completing boot camp at MCRD San Diego, he received additional training as an aviation mechanic. Bartoski was posted to the fighter squadron VMF-123 in January, 1944, and flourished among the complicated machinery, attaining the rank of corporal within a year of his enlistment.

In the summer of 1945, Corporal Bartosik was re-trained as an infantry squad leader, sent to the 69th Replacement Draft, and assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines. He trained with the company for only a few weeks before the war ended; Bartosik never fired a shot in anger. He was honorably discharged in July, 1946.

Bartosik died in Chicago in 1958. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Springfield, Illinois.
