Robert Baer was drafted into the Marine Corps in early 1944. He trained at Parris Island, and became an aviation mechanic with VMTB-144. His status as a mechanic was revoked in April, 1945, and he was instead assigned to an infantry replacement draft bound for Hawaii.

Private Baer was assigned as a replacement to the Fourth Marine Division, then recovering from the battle of Iwo Jima at Camp Maui. He was assigned to Company B, 24th Marines as a rifleman while rehearsing for the invasion of Japan. The war ended before he saw any combat, and Baer was sent to the 18th Service Battalion, where he served as an MP through the year 1946.

Baer was honorably discharged as a Private First Class.
