Before joining battalion

Enlisted in US Marine Corps Reserve in April 1939; attended drills with Company A, Sixth Battalion, Philadelphia, through January 1941. To Marine Barracks, Naval Ammunition Depot, Fort Mifflin, for duty through January 1943. During service at Fort Mifflin, advanced in rank from private to sergeant.

Joined Baker Company, First Separate Battalion (Reinforced) at New River, NC, 14 February 1943.

Reenlisted 24 April 1943 in regular Marine Corps; awarded Good Conduct Medal.
