He enlisted in the Marines in 1944, and became a machine gunner with Charlie Company, 24th Marines, that fall. He made the landing on Iwo Jima and fought through twenty one days of the battle. A Japanese sniper hit him in the neck on March 16, 1945, and he was quickly evacuated. He recovered, and was discharged with the rank of corporal.
