Enlisted at Los Angeles, CA on 29 January 1941. Outposted to Sea School, Marine Corps Base San Diego 12 April 1941; assigned to Marine Detachment aboard USS Portland (CA-33) at Pearl Harbor on 3 July 1941.
While aboard Portland, participated in the battles of the Coral Sea, Midway, and the Guadalcanal campaign.
Transferred to US Naval Hospital Long Beach, CA (sick, reason unknown) in spring 1943. Upon release, assigned duty at Marine Barracks, Naval Operating Base Terminal Island through September 1943.
Joined Able Company, First Battalion, 24th Marines at Camp Pendleton, CA on 3 September 1943.
