Service & Campaigns
Enlisted in US Navy V-5 program for naval aviation cadets, sent to Navy Pre-Flight School at St. Mary’s College. Failed to complete pre-flight training and discharged in October 1942.
Enlisted in Marine Corps on 12 January 1943; boot camp at MCRD San Diego, followed by infantry training at Camp Elliott. Accepted to Candidates’ Detachment, Camp Elliott on 16 July 1943; transferred to Officer Candidates School, Quantico, on 30 October 1943. Received commission on 12 January 1944. Completed Reserve Officers Class at Quantico and additional infantry training at Camp Elliott. Assigned to 58th Replacement Battalion for transit overseas.
On 10 July 1944, joined HQ Company, Special Troops, Fourth Marine Division (rear echelon) at Camp Maui. Transferred to Charlie Company, First Battalion, 24th Marines on 5 September 1944; reassigned to HQ Company, First Battalion, 24th Marines on 7 December 1944 for duty as liaison officer.
