Before joining battalion

Enlisted 27 February 1941; boot camp at MCRD San Diego with Fourth Recruit Battalion. Assigned to Rifle Range Detachment, MCB San Diego as student coach in summer 1941. Served as rifle instructor and range guard through April 1943.

Transferred to Dog Company, First Battalion, 24th Marines at Camp Pendleton on 19 April 1943.
