July 8, 1944 – killed in action (gunshot wounds); exact circumstances unknown. Awarded Bronze Star Medal for actions on this date.

As a member of a machine-gun squad serving with a battalion of a Marine division during action against Japanese forces on Saipan from 15 Jun – 8 July 1944. Assigned the hazardous mission of assisting a squad in clearing the beach line of snipers, Pfc, Comer pressed home his attack, destroying the enemy at perilously close range. Throughout this entire period of vital operations, he consistently displayed exceptional fighting ability and gallant determination, performing his duties with steadfast courage until he was wounded by enemy fire.
