Before joining battalion

Enlisted at Louisville, Kentucky on 12 August 1943; boot camp at Naval Training Center Great Lakes, Illinois, followed by Hospital Corps School. Appointed Hospital Apprentice, Second Class on 17 December 1943; next day, transferred to USNH Mare Island. To Company A, Field Medical School Battalion, Camp Elliott, California, on 17 January 1944. Upon graduation, transferred to Replacement Battalion, VAC for assignment.

Attached to medical section, First Battalion, 24th Marines on 8 May 1944.
