Service & Campaigns
Before joining battalion

Enlisted in Minneapolis, MN, on 8 December 1941; reported as the first Marine Corps enlistee for the city after Pearl Harbor. Called to active duty 16 December 1941. Boot camp at MCRD San Diego, outposted to Fox Company, Second Battalion, 2nd Marines in January 1942. Transferred to Charlie Company, First Battalion, 2nd Marines for overseas deployment.

As a member of C/1/2nd Marines, participated in the Guadalcanal campaign, seeing action on the outlying islands as well as Guadalcanal itself. PFC Sweet was wounded in action (gunshot, back) at the Matanikau River on 3 November 1942. Returned to duty and rose to rank of sergeant while stationed in New Zealand. On 4 October 1943, transferred to Casual Battalion,  Camp Elliott, California. Duty with Casual Battalions at Camps Elliott and Pendleton through late 1944.

Joined Charlie Company, First Battalion, 24th Marines at Camp Maui on 30 December 1944.
