Before joining battalion

Enlisted January 1941; appointed Private First Class and officer candidate. Trained with Second Candidates’ Class at MCB Quantico; commissioned second lieutenant on 29 May 1941, and completed training with Fifth Reserve Officers’ Class in September 1941. Assigned to the G/2/5th Marines at MCB New River until 1 January 1942, at which time transferred to the 15th Naval District, Panama Canal Zone. Duty with Naval Operating Base Balboa and First Guard Company, US Submarine Base Coco Solo, through December 1942.

On 6 January 1943, joined Baker Company, First Separate Battalion (Reinforced) at Camp Lejeune as commanding officer.

March 9, 1945 – joined from Headquarters, 24th Marines for temporary duty as company commander.
March 18, 1945 – returned to duty with Headquarters, 24th Marines. Company command restored to Capt. William A. Eddy, Jr.

Campaign Narrative

After leaving battalion

In April 1945, temporarily attached to Headquarters Battalion, Fourth Marine Division as assistant operations officer. Appointment made permanent on 28 July 1945; served in that capacity through end of war.

Transferred to Marine Barracks, Naval Air Station Lakehurst, NJ, on 6 January 1946. Returned to San Diego late 1946 as instructor in amphibious reconnaissance; duty with various training units at MCB San Diego through mid-1949. Transferred to Company C, HQ Battalion, HQMC in Washington to serve in the Office of the Commander, Sea Transport Service late 1949; duty there until mid-1951 when assigned to Marine Detachment, Naval Station Kodiak, Alaska. At Kodiak through spring of 1953.

From mid-1953 to mid-1954, instructing at MCB Quantico. Reassigned to H&S Company, First Battalion, 2nd Marines at Camp Lejeune through January 1956, at which time returned to Company C, HQ Battalion, HQMC in Arlington, VA. Last appears on available muster rolls with this outfit in October, 1958.

Subsequent service details unknown. Retired on 30 July 1968 with rank of colonel.

We had another great guy in our battalion, Captain Cokin, who had B Company. I can’t think of one thing I did in the war that Cokin didn’t equal. Yet I got much more recognition than he did.
Milton died on July 9, 2010, and is buried in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego, California
