Before joining battalion

Enlisted in Marine Corps Reserve Platoon Leaders Class on 6 May 1941; attended eight week summer training session. Returned to active duty after college graduation, assigned to Twelfth Reserve Officers’ Class at Quantico, Virginia. Joined Able Company, First Separate Battalion (Reinforced) at New River, North Carolina on 12 December 1942.

Saipan

Outfit: HQ/1/24th Marines (Scout/Sniper platoon)

Important Events: 
June 26, 1944 – started two-day combat patrol clearing caves around Kagman Point, capturing 53 prisoners
July 2, 1944 – wounded in action (multiple shrapnel wounds, superficial, in legs, abdomen, chest, arms, and face). Evacuated to unknown vessel.

Campaign Narrative

After leaving battalion

Admitted to US Fleet Hospital #110 (Banika, Russell Islands) on 11 July 1944. Transferred to US Fleet Hospital #105 (Noumea, New Caledonia) on 15 August 1944. On 3 September 1944, ordered back to United States for further treatment and disposition. Arrived at US Naval Hospital Oakland, CA on 18 September 1944.

Discharged from hospital on 3 October 1944, granted 30 days convalescent leave. Upon return, reported to US Naval Hospital Chelsea, MA, for additional treatment. On 20 January 1945, to duty at Marine Barracks Navy Yard Boston, MA. Served aboard receiving ship USS Reina Mercedes as Marine detachment athletic officer; last known assignment before leaving service on 4 February 1946 with rank of captain.
