Lloyd Ahlman was born in rural Nebraska, and raised as a farmer’s son in the small town of Norfolk. His family, headed by Lawrence and Bessie Ahlman, picked up and moved west in 1936, settling in Culver City, California the following year.

Eighteen-year-old Lloyd joined the Navy on March 1, 1943, and was selected for medical training, attending Field Hospital School in preparation for joining the Fleet Marine Force. He was assigned to the Fourth Marine Division’s medical battalion in July, 1944, and joined First Battalion, 24th Marines that September.

Ahlman served with First Battalion until he was wounded and evacuated from Iwo Jima on March 3, 1945. It was the end of combat for him; the young corpsman would spend the next several months in hospitals and on limited duty until his honorable discharge on April 1, 1946.

Lloyd Ahlman returned to Los Angeles after the war; from the few records available, it appears he married one Phyllis Gearin in 1957, and was employed by Golden Creme dairy farms for many years. The Ahlmans eventually retired to Nebraska, and Lloyd spent his remaining years in his hometown. He died in 2004 and is buried in Allbery Cemetery, Norfolk.
