Before joining battalion

Enlisted at Louisville, Kentucky, on 22 October 1942. Boot camp with Tenth Recruit Battalion at Parris Island; completed training with 13th Separate Recruit Battalion, New River, North Carolina.

Joined Baker Company, First Separate Battalion (Reinforced) at New River on 15 December 1942.

Important Events: 
June 18, 1944 – wounded in action (shell fragment in right shoulder, collapsing lung); evacuated to USS Solace.

Campaign Narrative

Admitted to US Fleet Hospital #108 (Guadalcanal) on 26 June 1944. Discharged to 16th Field Depot on 12 July; returned to duty with B/1/24th Marines at Camp Maui on 15 August 1944.

After leaving battalion

After returning to duty, promoted to Corporal on 29 August and awarded Purple Heart Medal on 30 October 1944.

On 31 October 1944, “collapsed” at Camp Maui and hospitalized at US Army Hospital #8. Dropped from battalion rolls on 20 November 1944, transferred to Navy Hospital #128 for additional treatment. Diagnosed with “psychoneurosis / war neurosis” and sent to US Naval Hospital San Leandro, California, January 1945.

Recommended for release from service by medical survey on 14 May; honorably discharged on 22 May 1945.
