Service & Campaigns
Before joining battalion

Enlisted at Chicago on 4 August 1942; boot camp at MCRD San Diego. Outposted directly to Second Special Weapons Battalion and departed for New Zealand on 19 October 1942. Participated in the Guadalcanal campaign as a member of Battery A (40mm anti-aircraft), Second Special Weapons Battalion, Second Marine Division. After recuperation in New Zealand, participated in the Tarawa campaign on temporary assignment with the 6th Marines.

In spring 1944, returned to continental United States for duty with Light Anti-Aircraft Group, 13th AA Battalion, Camp Lejeune. Transferred to San Diego for second overseas deployment. Arrived in Hawaii late summer 1944; assigned to Service Battalion, Transient Center, Fleet Marine Force Pacific.

Joined Baker Company, First Battalion, 24th Marines at Camp Maui on 18 September 1944.
