Enlisted at Chicago, Illinois on 29 May 1942; boot camp at MCRD San Diego with Sixth Recruit Battalion. Outposted to Naval Operating Base Mare Island, and assigned duty at Naval Supply Depot, Oakland, CA through summer 1943. Attended infantry school at Camp Elliott, California.

Joined Baker Company, First Battalion, 24th Marines at Camp Pendleton on 25 August 1943.
