Bill married Alice Nola Nyberg, also of Clay Center, at San Diego in 1943. Nola lived in San Diego until Bill’s discharge in 1946.

Enlisted at Kansas City, MO on 20 January 1942; transferred same day to MCRD San Diego. Boot camp with Fifth Recruit Battalion. Outposted to Rifle Range Detachment, San Diego, in April 1942 as coach/instructor. Duty with detachment through 19 January 1944, at which time transferred to Fourth Signal Company, 4th Marine Division, for deployment overseas.
Joined Charlie Company, First Battalion, 24th Marines at Camp Maui on 21 February 1944.

Well, today is the day I guess we'll always remember. The end of the war with Japan. I thought I'd be jumping and hollering and raising the devil but I don't feel any different. If anything, I feel sort of sad. I keep thinking of the guys that can't be with us. The guys with no legs or arms. Nola I have so much to be thankful for. I've thanked God that I am sill alive and too that I have the sweetest and braves wife in the world. I love you, Nola.
Have a big parade + review tomorrow. Better hit the sack as I have to shake a leg in the morning.
