Service & Campaigns
Before joining battalion

Boot camp at MCRD San Diego with First Recruit Battalion. Outposted to George Company, Second Battalion, 6th Marines, in January 1941; deployed to Iceland in July 1941. Duty near Reykjavik through February 1942, during which time he was rated Specialist 6th Class (automatic rifleman).

On 15 January, Springman was on duty at Vatnamyri Aerodrome when a violent storm blew the guardhouse over. He was treated for “abrasion over right eye and on right cheek and contusion of left hip.”

Returned to San Diego with regiment in spring of 1942. In July 1942, transferred to Camp Lejeune; served briefly with K/2/21st Marines, and ultimately assigned to the 51st Composite Defense Battalion.

In Spring 1943, transferred to Fox Company, Second Battalion, 24th Marines as a sergeant.

Participated in the battles of Roi-Namur, Saipan, and Tinian. Promoted to Technical Sergeant on 18 July 1944; field commission as Second Lieutenant on 17 August 1944 (rank dating to 2 July 1944).

Transferred to First Battalion, 24th Marines on 4 September 1944 for duty as platoon leader.

Campaign Narrative

After leaving battalion

Transferred to Fleet Marine Force, Pacific, on 7 September 1945. On rolls of Marine Barracks, US Navy Training Center, Great Lakes through discharge on 18 December 1945.

Rejoined Marine Corps Reserve in 1951; served through 1957, reaching final rank of Major.

William died on July 31, 1986, and is buried in Elm Grove Cemetery, Washington, Iowa
