Service & Campaigns
Enlisted in Marine Corps Reserve on 8 May 1941; assigned to inactive duty with Platoon Leader’s Unit, Ninth Reserve District. To active duty and transferred to Candidates’ Class, Marine Corps Base Quantico on 13 October 1941. Commissioned Second Lieutenant at Quantico on 31 January 1942; additional instruction with Reserve Officers’ Class and Marine Corps Schools Detachment (Base Defense Section, Artillery Course). In summer 1942, assigned to Marine Barracks Parris Island; assumed command of post Military Police company.
In winter 1942, transferred to 23rd Marines at New River, North Carolina. Over the course of 1943, served with companies George, HQ/2Bn, Fox (as executive officer), How (as commanding officer), and King (executive officer). Transferred to Service and Supply Company, Fourth Service Battalion, as company commander in winter 1943, with the rank of Captain.
As CO of S&S Company, participated in campaigns for Roi-Namur, Saipan, and Tinian.
Transferred to Headquarters Company, First Battalion, 24th Marines at Camp Maui on 1 October 1944, for duty as company commander.
