They say that when it rains, it pours, and for those who thought that aphorism didn’t apply to this website, Arthur Allen is here to prove you wrong. Mr. Allen is the grandson of Ernest W. Rollings Sr, a mortarman who served with Company A from September 1944 to the end of the war, participating in the battle of Iwo Jima. These are some of the only pictures known to exist of First Battalion on Iwo Jima, and among the first I’ve seen that feature the second generation of Company A’s mortar section.
These pictures are from the late Corporal Rollings’ collection.
