June 18, 1944 – awarded Navy and Marine Corps Medal for actions on this date.
For heroism while serving as a company corpsman attached to a Marine infantry battalion during the invasion of Saipan Island, Marianas Group. On 18 June 1944, Hospital Apprentice First Class Marquez’s company received heavy machine gun and 37mm fire from Japanese tanks attempting a counterattack. In the period of a few minutes, many casualties were suffered. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, he immediately and unhesitatingly went forward and began administering first aid to the wounded. During the time he was caring for the wounded, the enemy tanks commenced firing and though the situation was desperate, he calmly and efficiently treated and directed the evacuation of the casualties. His great courage and heroic devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
