Before joining battalion

Boot camp at MCRD San Diego with Ninth Recruit Battalion. Outposted to Marine Barracks, Camp Dunlap, Niland, CA on 15 October 1942 for duty as truck driver.

Transferred to Infantry Battalion, Camp Elliott, CA for infantry training in summer 1943. Assigned to Dog Company, First Battalion, 24th Marines at Camp Pendleton, 25 August 1943.

Citation

Dave set up his machine gun and commenced firing, and continued to fire so as to enable our medical personnel to attend the wounded. He put this gun in action without orders because he knew that he was the only one who could cover those men. A grenade hit the gun and killed him instantly.
