Service & Campaigns
Boot camp at Parris Island. Outposted to First Tank Company, 1st Marine Brigade at Quantico on 30 September 1940. Participated in landing exercises at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Rated Specialist 5th Class (mechanic).
To Scout Company, First Marine Division in spring 1941; served through mid-1942 as mechanic. On rolls of First Separate Tank Company, 3rd Marines in July 1942; H&S Battery, 11th Defense Battalion in September 1942. Transferred to TC New River, North Carolina on 7 October 1942.
In December 1942, to Fort Robinson, Nebraska, for instruction in dog training. Returned to Camp Lejeune 20 January 1943 for continued instruction in dog training. Student trainer through 3o April 1943, at which point transferred to Fleet Marine Force, Pacific, with rank of corporal.
On 1 July 1943, assigned to Company D (Scout), Fourth Tank Battalion, Camp Pendleton, California. Temporarily attached Scout Platoon, 23rd Marines, Fourth Marine Division.
