Howard Francis Shattuck, Jr.

Enlisted March 1942 and placed on inactive duty with Platoon Leaders’ Unit, Third Reserve District. Called to active duty after college graduation, assigned to Company K, Officer Candidates’ Class at Quantico, Virginia. Commissioned as second lieutenant on 26 September 1942; attended Twelfth Reserve Officers’ Class at Quantico, Virginia.

Joined Baker Company, First Separate Battalion (Reinforced) at New River, North Carolina, on 12 December 1942.

Transferred to hospital ship USS Solace on 3 February; admitted to unknown military hospital in Hawaii. Returned to duty at Camp Maui on 10 April 1944.

Campaign Narrative

Initial treatment at unknown naval hospital. Discharged 30 June 1944; embarked aboard USS Thetis Bay, arrived and admitted to US Naval Hospital #10 (Aiea Heights) on 5 July 1944. On 24 July, transferred to Camp Pendleton, CA.

Upon release from hospital, reassigned to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for duty as training and munitions officer through fall 1945. Transferred to 8th Casual Company and returned to inactive duty status in October 1945.

Remained on inactive duty with General Service Unit, 3rd Reserve District through summer 1946; on rolls of Officers’ Volunteer Reserve from 1951-1953. Last known rank of major.
