1 thought on “Horace I. Porter”

  1. Mr. Porter was my father-In law. His nickname was “HIP”. I married his daughter Susan. I have a glorious black and white photo of him (tried to copy paste is here but was not able) in Kwajalein Atoll, Roi-Namur in the Marshall Islands on February 8, 1944. I intend on getting it matted and framed with the date, his name, rank and unit. It is very difficult to get the correct info. I am sure he was with the 4th Marine Division, 24th Marines Regiment. They had 3 Battalions. I am not sure if he were in the 2nd or 3rd Battalion and God only knows what Company. As best as I can tell the 1st Battalion landed and made a beach head on Roi-Namur while the 2nd and 3rd were steaming underway to Roi-Namur, from San Diego. After this action his battalion went to Maui. If not he would have went to Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima.

Mr. Porter was a good man. I have a great deal of respect for him and his generation. I had the distinct honor of praying with him on his death bed in his late 80’s while his daughter, my wife Susan looked on. He rededicated his life in heart felt sincerity, to GOD while tears streamed down his face. Something men did not do in his generation.

If you or anyone else have any additional info you can share, it would be greatly appreciated.
