Received Commendation Ribbon for service during the battle.
For meritorious devotion to duty while serving with a Marine battalion in action against enemy Japanese forces during the invasion of Namur Island, Kwajalein atoll, February 1 and 2, 1944. Acting as a hospital corpsman, he worked continuously and skillfully on the wounded, never hesitating to go where he was needed no matter how heavy the enemy fire or how exposed the position. His efficient and courageous performance of his duties was in keeping with the highest traditions of the naval service.

Received Bronze Star Medal for service during the battle.
For heroic service as a company aid man attached to the First Battalion, Twenty-fourth Marines, Fourth Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Marianas Islands, from 15 June to 9 July 1944. Calm and efficient under extremely hazardous conditions, Gottlieb repeatedly exposed himself to intense hostile fire in order to administer first aid to the wounded, consistently carrying out his vital duties with expert professional skill. By his resolute devotion to duty and selfless efforts on behalf of others, he was a constant inspiration to his comrades and his gallant conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
