Jack’s older brother, PFC Joseph J. Cummings, died as a prisoner of war at Camp O’Donnell, Philippines on August 4, 1942.

Assigned to 57th Replacement Battalion on 1 April 1944 for transit to Pacific; joined Replacement Battalion, Transient Center, V Amphibious Corps. Duty with Third Provisional Marine Detachment at Camp Maui from May – September 1944.
