Before joining battalion

Boot camp at Parris Island with Fifth Recruit Battalion. Outposted to Naval Operating Base Norfolk, Virginia.

To 9th Defense Battalion at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, on 22 July 1942; assigned to Special Weapons Group. Served with Second Guard Company and 20mm Battery, 13th Defense Battalion, through July 1943.

Transferred to 25th Marines at Camp Elliott, California, late summer 1943. Assigned to H&S Battery, Fourth Special Weapons Battalion on 12 October 1943.

Participated in Operation Flintlock at Kwajalein atoll, 31 January – 5 February 1944.
