Exactly why Aloysius Kuscavage chose to serve under the name “Leo Ksiekievicz” is not known. His father’s original surname was “Ksiazkiewicz” but this was Americanized (or continually misspelled or mispronounced) into “Kuscavage” before Leo was born. It appears he only used this name in connection with his military service. To add to the confusion, his brother Carl used “Kuscavage” on his Marine Corps documentation.
