Everett Schafer's Letters

Letter #20
It Is Nothing Like Overseas

To Mrs. Dora Schafer
3 June 1945

June 3 1945
RRC San Diego[1]

Dear Mom,

Here I am in America, and so far I haven’t gotten used to it yet. Things certainly have changed and it is nothing like overseas. But all in all I’m sure glad to be back.

I arrived in San Francisco June 1st and stayed two days, then on down here to San Diego. This is a reclassification and redistribution center. My transfer and leave papers are to be fixed up and it will take a week to ten days. I also received a new issue of clothes, and learn how to get along here in the States, rationing and all such things.

I probably [will] be sent to the east coast somewhere for duty. I find all that out in a few days. I’ll be home about the twelfth to thirtieth of June, somewhere along there. I sent you a telegram from Frisco the day I got there.

The last time I saw Delwin he was at Pearl Harbor. I saw him aboard his ship the day he left Pearl for Guam. He may come back to Pearl, but I couldn’t say. He was in good spirits and getting along fine. I suppose you haven’t heard from him for awhile, so I know you want to know about him.

I can’t think of much more except tell all I’m OK and will be seeing them soon.

Love
Everett

Footnotes

1. As Everett notes below, he is at the San Diego Reclassification & Redistribution Center. Marines were evaluated here for further assignment, taking into account their overseas duty, wounds suffered in action, and other factors.
