Before joining battalion

Boot camp at Parris Island with Eighth Recruit Battalion. Outposted to Camp Lejeune, NC, on 30 January 1944. Assigned to 47th Replacement Battalion for transit to Pacific; joined Replacement Battalion, Transient Center, V Amphibious Corps on 13 April 1944. Duty with Third Provisional Marine Detachment at Camp Maui from May – September 1944.

Joined Able Company, First Battalion, 24th Marines on 20 September 1944.

NOTE: Three Marines named Norman Bell were killed at Iwo Jima.
In addition to Norman Richard (A/1/24), Sgt. Norman Boughner Bell (B/1/25) was KIA on 19 February, and PFC Norman Lawrence Bell (H&S/1/13) was KIA 12 March.
Understandably, Norman Richard and Norman Lawrence are frequently confused. This picture is Norman L. Bell of Nutley, NJ.
