Archie Adam was born in 1920 and raised in New Jersey.

In 1944, he received his draft notice and entered the Marine Corps. After training at Parris Island and Camp Lejeune, Private Adam was attached to the 30th Replacement Draft and dispatched across the country to San Diego.

Six months after he reported for boot camp, Archie Adam was on his way to Iwo Jima. He landed a few days after the battle began; his first experience on the island was probably helping organize the beachhead before being assigned to Company B, 24th Marines on February 27.

Adam had one week to get used to his new unit and comrades; on March 3, he went into combat for the first time. Although casualties among the replacements were extremely high, Adam managed to beat the odds – he survived the battle without injury.

Upon his return to Camp Maui, Adam was promoted to Private First Class. He became a messenger and runner for his platoon’s headquarters, and was serving in that capacity when the war ended.

Adam was posted to the 18th Service Battalion for several months after the war – first as an MP with the guard company, and then as an auto mechanic with the cargo company. He was honorably discharged on June 22, 1946, after slightly more than two years in uniform.

Archie Adam died in Litchfield, Connecticut, in 1986.
