Bert Beets was born in Paterson, New Jersey, in 1927. He was raised partly by his grandparents, Sanford and Ida Trodonie, in Maryland before moving to Flourtown, PA as a child.

He enlisted in the Marine Corps in April, 1944, but was evidently not called to active duty for several months; he does not appear in recruit training at Parris Island until October, 1944. Private Beets was instructed in the use of the Browning light machine gun at Camp Lejeune, and traveled to Hawaii as a member of the 59th Replacement Draft. He joined the MG platoon of Company A, 24th Marines in the summer of 1945, but the war ended before he saw any combat. Beets served out the rest of his enlistment with the 17th Service Command and was discharged on August 30, 1946.

Beets married Mary Millicent Wilkinson in Philadelphia in 1947; they settled in Easton, Maryland where he worked as an operator for the Western Union company. By 1950, the Beets family included two young daughters.

Bert Beets died in Maryland in 2006. His burial place is unknown.
