Duane Allen began his career in the Marine Corps as a teenager on inactive reserve duty in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1944. He trained at Parris Island and Camp Lejeune before being assigned to the 39th Replacement Draft in January 1945.
Private Allen joined Company B, 24th Marines, when the company returned from the battle of Iwo Jima. He trained as a machine gunner, but the war ended before he saw combat.
Allen was transferred to the 18th Service Battalion and attained the rank of Private First Class by the time of his discharge in the summer of 1946.
