Ernest Beard was drafted into the Marine Corps in October, 1944. He trained with the Fourth Recruit Battalion at Parris Island and the Fourth Infantry Training Battalion at Camp Lejeune before shipping to Hawaii as a rifleman with the 59th Replacement Draft.
Private Beard joined Able Company, 24th Marines in the summer of 1945; the war ended while he was preparing for the invasion of Japan. As the regiment demobilized, most of its members were sent to service assignments to finish out their enlistments; Ernest Beard, however, was shipped back to the East Coast aboard the USS Monterey. He had contracted some illness or been injured badly enough to be hospitalized in the Naval Hospital in New York City, and was discharged (probably for reasons of disability) that December.
Beard died in West Virginia in 1980. His burial place is unknown.
