Francis Baranoski was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. His parents, Francis and Matilda, supported their family with Francis’ work as an acetylene welder in a Baltimore shipyard.
Baranoski volunteered to serve with the Marine Corps during his seventeenth year, but was not ordered to active duty on September 25, 1944 – after his eighteenth birthday. After training at Parris Island, he was sent to the 59th Replacement Draft, and then joined Company A, 24th Marines as a replacement machine gunner on May 1, 1945.
Private Baranoski trained with Company A at Camp Maui for the invasion of Japan, but the war ended before he saw any combat. When his regiment was disbanded, Baranoski was transferred to the 17th Service Command, where he served as an MP until his honorable discharge on August 16, 1946.
Francis Baranoski compiled this scrapbook of his service, both with Company A and with the military police company of the 6th Service Depot. All scans kindly provided by Joseph Baranoski.
After the war, Francis Baranoski returned to Maryland and settled in Joppa. He died in October, 1988.
