Gerald Ayres was born in Kentucky in 1926, and grew up on the family farm in Owen. He was eighteen years old when he joined the Marine Corps; after completing his training in the summer of 1945, Private Ayres was transferred to the 24th Marine Regiment, and became a rifleman with Company A. He trained with them for the invasion of Japan, but the war ended before he had a chance to see combat.
Ayres spent the rest of his enlistment with the 9th MP Battalion in San Diego, California. He was discharged as a corporal.
The former NCO died in his hometown at the age of 49, and is buried in Owenton IOOF Cemetery.
