Harold Bakewell was born and raised in Brownsville, Pennsylvania. He volunteered for the Marine Corps at the age of seventeen, but was not called to active duty until shortly after his eighteenth birthday.
After training at Parris Island, Private Baker was sent to the 59th Replacement Draft, and then joined Company A, 24th Marines as a replacement BAR gunner in the summer of 1945. He trained with them at Camp Maui for the invasion of Japan, but the war ended before he saw any combat. When his regiment disbanded, Bakewell was sent to the 17th Service Command, where he served as a driver until his discharge.
Bakewell settled in Akron, Ohio, where he married Ethel Barta. He raised three children while working alternately as a teacher, salesman, carpet cleaner, farmer, and restaurant owner. He retired to Danville, Ohio, where he died in 2006.
Harold Bakewell is buried in Ohio Veterans Home Cemetery, Sandusky, OH.
