Harold Bailey joined Company B, 24th Marines in the summer of 1945 as a replacement BAR gunner. The war ended before he saw any combat.

When his regiment disbanded, Bailey served as an adjutant’s runner with the Fleet Marine Force Service Command. He was discharged as a Private First Class in 1946, and returned to the midwest to become a yard foreman for the Santa Fe Railroad. An interest in jewelry and watchmaking allowed him to support his family with additional income from a cottage industry in watch repair.

Bailey died in Minneapolis, Kansas in 2011. He is buried in Thayer Cemetery, Neosho County.
