Harold Bartlett was drafted into the Marine Corps in the fall of 1944. After completing boot camp at Parris Island, he underwent further training at Camp Lejeune and was sent to Camp Pendleton, California, as a member of the 39th Replacement Draft in the spring of 1945.
Private Bartlett was assigned to Company C, First Battalion, 24th Marines on April 10 1945; he was a replacement for a casualty lost in the battle of Iwo Jima. He served as a BAR gunner during training at Camp Maui, and expected to participate in the eventual invasion of Japan. However, the war ended before he saw any combat.
When his regiment disbanded, Bartlett was assigned to the 17th Service Battalion to finish out his enlistment. He was honorably discharged as a Private First Class in 1946.
After the war, Bartlett settled in Alabama, where he married. He died in 1995, and is buried in Helena Cemetery, Shelby County, Alabama.
