James Austin was inducted into the Marine Corps in December, 1944. He trained with the 3rd Recruit Battalion at Parris Island, then was posted to the 58th Replacement Draft.
Private Austin was assigned as a replacement to the Fourth Marine Division, then recovering from the battle of Iwo Jima at Camp Maui. He was originally assigned to Company B, 24th Marines as a platoon messenger, but re-trained as mortar gunner while rehearsing for the invasion of Japan. The war ended before he saw any combat, and Austin was sent to the 18th Service Battalion, where he served through the year 1946.
Austin was honorably discharged as a Private First Class. Little is known of his life after the war; he died in 1987 and is buried in Hamlin Memorial Cemetery, Hamlin, Texas.
