James Bennett was drafted into the Marine Corps in late 1944. He trained with the 6th Recruit Battalion at Parris Island that fall, and after completing advanced infantry training at Camp Lejeune was shipped out to Hawaii to join the Fourth Marine Division.
Private Bennett joined Company A, 24th Marines as a mortarman in the spring of 1945. He prepared for the invasion of Japan, but the war ended before he saw any combat.
Bennett served out the rest of his enlistment as an MP with a Hawaii-based service depot. He was discharged as a corporal in the spring of 1947.
