Joseph Barnes enlisted in the Marine Corps in October, 1944. He trained at Parris Island and Camp Lejeune before being assigned to the 59th Replacement Draft and sent to Hawaii to join the Fourth Marine Division.
Private Barnes was initially assigned to Company A, 1/24 as a machine gunner, effective 1 May 1945. However, the assault platoon of HQ Company needed volunteers, and Barnes requested the dangerous duty. He received extra training in the use of demolition charges, bazookas, and flamethrowers as he made mock assaults against phony bunkers set up at Camp Maui. However, the war ended before he could see combat.
Barnes went on to serve with the 17th Service Battalion in Hawaii; he held a guard post with that organization until his discharge in 1946. Nothing is known about his life after the war.
