Louis Albergo was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He was inducted into the Marine Corps a few months after his eighteenth birthday, and trained at MCRD San Diego.

Private Albergo’s first assignment, to which he reported on April 20 1944, was as a guard at the Naval Air Station at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Albergo was promoted to Private First Class shortly after arriving at Pearl Harbor; he stayed at that post for the next year before being transferred to Company A, 24th Marines as a rifleman. He anticipated participating in the invasion of Japan, but the war ended before he saw combat.

When his battalion disbanded, Albergo served as an MP at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was honorably discharged on April 20, 1946; two years to the day after he first reported for duty. Officially, he was rated as a corporal, though he held the rank for only hours before being released from the service.

Louis Albergo returned to Illinois, where he married and started a family. He died in Elmwood Park in 1972.
