Norman Barncord was born in Pennsylvania in 1927. He was raised in Freeport, Illinois and Waynesboro, Pennsylvania by Frank and Esther Barncord, and volunteered for the Marine Corps in November, 1944, at the age of seventeen.

Private Barncord trained at Parris Island and Camp Lejeune in the early part of 1945, and was sent west to join the Fleet Marine Force that spring. He became a BAR gunner in  Company B, 24th Marines, but the war ended before he saw any combat. The young Marine was transferred to the Seventeenth Service Battalion and became a member of the Headquarters and Supply Company. Instead of campaigning with his automatic rifle, Barncord earned a promotion to PFC as a records clerk. He worked in Marine Corps administration until his discharge in June, 1947.

After the war, Norman Barncord married a Waynesboro girl named Dorothy Bingaman and raised four children. He died in Jacksonville, Florida, in 2002.
