Richard Bauer was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and joined the Marine Corps Reserve at the age of seventeen. He was kept waiting on inactive status for several months before finally receiving orders to report to Parris Island for training; from there, he went to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Private Bauer was then sent across the country as a part of a replacement draft; he was posted to Company A, 24th Marines in May, 1945. For the last few months of the war, Bauer trained as a mortarman with Company A; Japan surrendered before he had a chance to fight.

When his outfit disbanded, Bauer was promoted to Private First Class and transferred to Headquarters and Supply Company, 17th Service Command. He served with them until hospitalized for illness in July, 1946; Bauer was honorably discharged shortly thereafter.

Bauer returned to Pennsylvania after the war; he applied for veteran’s benefits from an address in Clifton Heights in 1950. Little else is known about his life prior to his death in Hartly, Delaware in 2003.

Richard Bauer is buried in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
