Richard Beamish was inducted into the Marine Corps in the last months of 1944. He went through boot camp at Parris Island (where he qualified as a rifle sharpshooter) and advanced infantry training at Camp Lejeune before shipping out to Hawaii as part of the 59th Replacement Draft.
Private Beamish joined Company A, 24th Marines in the summer of 1945 and trained with them for the invasion of Japan, but the war ended before he saw any combat. When his regiment disbanded, Beamish was assigned first to the 9th MP Battalion, then to the 17th Separate MP Company. He and a number of his comrades from the 59th Draft got some overseas time under their belts as policemen at the newly established naval base in Okinawa before returning to the States for an honorable discharge in 1946.
