Robert Barnes was drafted into the Marine Corps in October, 1944. He trained at Parris Island and Camp Lejeune before being assigned to the 59th Replacement Draft and sent to Hawaii to join the Fourth Marine Division.
Private Barnes became a machine gunner with Company A, 24th Marines. Poor health seems to have plagued him during his service; he spent a considerable portion of the summer of 1945 in the hospital while he was meant to be training for the invasion of Japan. Although the war ended before he could see combat, Barnes went on to serve with the 17th Service Battalion in Hawaii; again, his health resulted in a long hospitalization that eventually ended in his honorable discharge for disability on July 15, 1946.
