We dug a three-man foxhole with two men from my squad, Wallace Holt and Leon Roquet. Everything was quiet until 12:30 A.M., when the Japanese at our front started yelling at us. They even threw rocks. It was obvious that there were a great many of them, and they were getting drunk.... At 2:00, all hell broke loose; they started the most devastating artillery and mortar attack we had ever been under. I remember shells coming so close to our foxhole that we all three were covered with dirt and pieces of shrapnel. I remember Roquet asking me if I was all right. I told him yes, but about that time, a big explosion took place on the edge of our hole. Holt turned to me and held up his arm and said, “I won’t be able to play baseball anymore, my hand is gone.” Holt got up and ran back to a first aid station. That’s the last time we heard from him.
Wallace died on September 5, 1997 and is buried in San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, Santa Nella, California
